Here's to reviving the (somewhat) forgotten craft of sewing.

Not so reunion dress

Apparently, we were supposed to pay our reunion dues on the 18th. So I guess I'll have to find some other occasion to wear my dress. Someone told me that those who RSVPed weren't really anyone we knew anyway, so I guess there's no real reason to go. What should I do with the dress instead!?

Suggestions?

Update on Reunion dress

So, I can't actually use the red lace around the waist on my reunion dress, as it's not stretchy. I can't fit that part over my shoulders or *other* wider areas. I'm thinking I'll wear the lace as a belt, however, maybe with a vintage button to attach it.

I finished the hem and attached the red lace to the neckline. It's very lovely if I do say so myself.
Also, since (now multiple) people have told me that a one-shouldered dress should only be worn when the hair is done up, I'm getting myself a 1960's up-do. That is... if the salon isn't booked that day. I called over 2 weeks in advance and left a message, so hopefully they will have some time.

If not, I suppose I'll see what I can get at another salon in the central Maine area. Not too much to choose from, up there...

Here's an example of what I'm thinking:

I would be most appreciative if there are any links you could post here for more vintage up-dos.

Just want to spread some sewing love.

Porch Furniture

I made these this spring, but I thought I'd share to give others some inspiration. The linen "Far, Far Away" collection makes great outdoor cushions. I wouldn't leave them anywhere they could get wet. My porch is covered so it works out. Here's a close up of the fabric:

I put zippers on the sides so I could take the covers off to wash them. It was kind of hard finding 27 inch zippers to match but I managed.

Almost finished!!

I didn't screw it up! Yet...

Here are some photos. I just need to attach the lace and finish the bottom hem.

Hope you like it!

Favorite things

I thought I'd share my tools of creation. They give me a little skip in my step.

My vintage Bernina 830 Record...
(I cropped the rest away because my workspace is embarrassingly messy.)

Threads of a different color....

This lovely pattern book with all of my patterns "neatly" inserted into clear, plastic sleeves. Yes, it's organized with dividers.

And, low and behold, the newest addition to the family Stitch, my vintage Bernette Funlock 004D Serger from Bernina! Complete with Blindstitch foot attachment!

HELP! Patterns for this silk needed!

Here's a photo of the silk fabric I bought at Mood in NYC. (Where they shop for Project Runway - yes, I actually did have only one half hour to select what I wanted.) I'm thinking that the dress should be scoop-necked, with half sleeves and a gathered waist, but I can't be sure! I'd love suggestions as to a pattern I should consider!

I have some ideas...

Let me know yours!!

Reunion mock-up

So, I made a mock-up of my reunion dress. Its a little tight around the belly - mine, not the hard abs of my dressform. I think I may be between a small and a medium for this pattern. What do you think?

The fabric I used for this one is made of bamboo. Very eco-friendly and so soft. I'm going to put a pretty applique on the shoulder.

The gathering along the waist is a bit messy. I was supposed to add an elastic band, but I'm afraid to try elastic on my serger. I'm thinking I like this dress. Should be lovely on the selected fabric!

10 year reunion dress

Here it goes, my first entry! "Ahem":

I just got a serger a few weeks ago and am just enamored with it! I can make so many more dresses with knit fabrics, and the patterns are so much easier!

So, my 10 year high school reunion is coming up fast!

I ordered this amazing fabric for my dress. It's from Japan. Nani Iro Spring 2011 knit. As someone who loves the look of a light blue with a splash of red, I also ordered some vintage lace to go on the major horizontal seams.

I'm crazy excited but very nervous to cut it!

The dress will be one shoulder, with empire waist and gathered skirt.

I hope i don't ruin the fabric! Wish me luck!

xoxo
